How GEO differs from AEO
The two overlap enough that people use them interchangeably, and the distinction is still settling. The useful split: AEO is about becoming the answer, GEO is about being a source a model draws on.
That changes where the work happens. AEO is mostly on your pages. GEO is substantially off them, because a model weighs what other sites say about you as well as what you say.
| AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Winning outcome | The system answers with your content | The system uses you as a source |
| Work happens | Mostly on your pages | Substantially off them |
| Content style | Short, self-contained answers | Evidence, data, and context |
| Measured by | Answer inclusion | Citation share and brand mentions |
Why your own website is not enough
Ranking and being cited are only loosely related. Ahrefs found in August 2025 that around 80% of the pages large language models cite do not rank in Google's top 100. Optimising purely for position leaves most of the opportunity untouched.
Third-party presence carries disproportionate weight. AirOps reported in October 2025 that brands are roughly 6.5 times more likely to be cited through someone else's domain than their own. Listicles, directories, and review platforms are the mechanism, not your blog.
What GEO work involves
- Getting into the third-party listicles and directories that models already quote
- Consistent entity statements, so every source describes your company the same way
- Original data and named quotes, which models prefer to unsourced assertions
- Tables and structured passages that survive extraction without losing meaning
How to measure it
Pick 30 to 50 prompts your buyers would type, run them monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews, and record whether you appear. Citation share against a baseline is the only honest GEO metric, and platforms diverge: one 2025 study found only 11% of domains were cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Why it matters for B2B marketing teams
The uncomfortable part for a B2B team is that most of this work is not on your website. Budget that assumes ten more blog posts will fix AI visibility underperforms a fraction of the same spend spent getting into the third-party roundups models already quote.
